National Picnic Day is April 23, 2017, a few of my blogger girlfriends and I decided there wasn’t a better to celebrate National Picnic Day and Friendships than meeting up at a local park and just enjoy each others company. Picnics are a great way to enjoy your food, wine, and time with people you admire or love. Picnics allow you time t0 de-stress from your day so why not grab a few friends and have a picnic this week?
Where did the term Picnic come from?
People have been eating their meals outside in the beauty of nature since the beginning of time. In fact, our modern-day idea of a picnic evolved from Medieval hunting feasts and Victorian garden parties. These were usually reserved for the very wealthy and involved multiple courses and elaborate preparations.
During the early 19th century a group of wealthy London citizens formed “The Picnic Society” to promote picnics as social gatherings. These picnics were potlucks, and each participant also had to provide a share of the entertainment. These wealthy socialites and their husbands drank from crystal goblets and listened to a live string quartet while eating their meals on the lawns! Today, picnics are more casual meals enjoyed on a picnic blanket normally in the park.
What’s better than enjoying time with friends “breaking bread” and drinking wine? Having a picnic doesn’t have to be this elaborate meal. We grabbed a blanket, fresh flowers, cheese, meats, and a cocktail to celebrate National Picnic day. We had a magical time. It even started raining on us but we didn’t let a little rain stop our fun!
So rain or shine, you better be picnicking this April 23—because it’s National Picnic Day! To celebrate National Picnic Day, take your family or friends to the nearest park and enjoy quality time with them because that is what life is all about.
