Cocktails with my toes in the sand, fresh lobster grilled right on the beach, an afternoon of beach excursions in that impossible turquoise water, and the ancient Mayan ruins perched on the cliffs at the island’s tip.

That, right there, is why Isla Mujeres belongs on your day trip agenda.

The fastest way to do an Isla Mujeres day trip from Cancun is the Ultramar ferry, which takes about 15 to 30 minutes and costs roughly $20 to $24 USD round trip.

Catch a morning boat, rent a golf cart when you land, loop the island (Playa Norte, Punta Sur, the turtle farm), eat lunch downtown, and catch the sunset before you head back.

You need about 6 to 8 hours to do it right.

Is Isla Mujeres Worth a Day Trip From Cancun?

Yes, if you’re staying in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or anywhere along the Riviera Maya, you’ve probably heard people rave about Isla Mujeres, this little island that used to be a quiet fishing town and is now one of the best day trips in the Caribbean.

Maybe what sold you was the promise of a margarita in your hand, soft sand with no seaweed, and water so clear it doesn’t look real.

If so, you heard right.

You have two ways to do it. You can book a full-day guided tour, and there are plenty on Viator, from the party catamarans to the family and snorkel trips (I compare the best ones further down).

Those are a solid choice if you want everything handled for you. But if the idea of being packed onto a boat and moved around on someone else’s clock makes you tense up, do what I do and go on your own.

It’s cheaper, it’s flexible, and this guide walks you through every step.

Either way, Isla Mujeres is worth it. It’s only 4.3 miles long, it’s walkable, it has the best beach in the region at Playa Norte, and you can see the highlights in a single day without staying overnight.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres From Cancun

Every route to the island is by boat. Here are your options, from cheapest to most comfortable.

The Ultramar ferry is the workhorse. Boats run frequently from early morning (first crossing around 5:30 am) until late (last boat back from Isla around midnight), so you’re never stranded.

Buy tickets only at the official Ultramar counters, sit on the top deck for the views, and screenshot the return schedule before you sail.

Money-saving note: the Puerto Juárez terminal is cheapest, but once you add a taxi or colectivo to get there from the Hotel Zone, it often evens out with the Hotel Zone piers.

Leaving From Puerto Juárez

If you’re staying downtown, near the airport, or anywhere outside the Hotel Zone, Puerto Juárez (Gran Puerto) is your terminal.

It’s the one locals use and the one most people coming straight from Cancun airport head to. The crossing runs about 20 minutes, and the ticket price is the same as the Hotel Zone piers.

It sits just outside downtown Cancun, roughly a 25-minute taxi ride or about 35 minutes by bus from the Hotel Zone.

Ultramar runs frequent departures starting around 5:30 am, and the last boat back from Isla Mujeres to Puerto Juárez leaves around midnight, so you have plenty of room to build your day.

Coming From Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya

Doing this as a day trip from Playa del Carmen is possible, but I won’t sugarcoat it: you’re looking at a bus or train, then a taxi, then the ferry, which can eat up two hours or more each way.

That’s a lot of travel for one day on the island. If you’re based down the Riviera Maya, you have two better options.

Either stay overnight on Isla Mujeres so the travel is worth it, or book a guided tour that handles the transfers for you. Viator and your hotel’s front desk will both have Playa del Carmen departures.

If you’re at a resort, just use the closest Hotel Zone pier.

My Private Boat Experience (Worth It for Groups)

I just returned from Cancun a few weeks ago, and my husband’s family rented a private boat for the day, and it was the most relaxed way I’ve ever reached the island.

The boat picked us up right from our hotel; we left at 8:00 am, and the ride over took about 30 minutes across calm morning water.

Instead of the public ferry dock, they dropped us at the marina, so we skipped the ticket lines and the taxi-stand hustle completely.

If you can split the cost with family or friends, a private charter is hands-down the most comfortable and secure option.

When to Arrive: Catch the Early Ferry

Aim for a 9:00 or 9:30 am crossing.

Arrive that early, and you’ll have the beach and downtown to yourself while the island is still quiet and cool.

By midday, the catamarans and tour boats pour in, and everything gets crazy and I mean hundreds of people everywhere.

An early start also gives you the full day to loop the island and still make the sunset before you head back, and you will absolutely need the entire day in Isla Mujeres.

Getting Around Isla Mujeres: Rent a Golf Cart

Once you land, the golf cart is the move. It’s the number one way to get around, and it turns the day into a real adventure.

Here’s the insider tip that saves you real money: the golf cart rentals right at the dock and marina will run you about $100.

But if you walk out of the marina and price one of the golf cart shops a block down the street, you can get the same thing for about $50 for 3 hours.

Same island, half the price, just for stepping past the first stand you see.

A few golf cart tips from experience:

• Photograph and video the cart for existing scratches before you drive off. This is how you avoid the fake-damage charge.
• They’ll usually hold your driver’s license while you have the cart. That’s standard, not a scam.
• One cart fits about four adults, so split it with your group.
• Park anywhere (there are no parking fees), but keep valuables out of sight.

Things to Do on an Isla Mujeres Day Trip

Here’s the loop to experience Isla Mujeres (Book Ahead), roughly north to south and back.

• Set sail across the bay: Skip the logistics and cruise over on a catamaran day tour with snorkeling, lunch, and an open bar handled for you.
• Get in the water: Book a snorkel trip to MUSA and the reefs to float over the underwater sculpture museum and see turtles, rays, and coral up close.
• Swim with whale sharks (seasonal): From roughly June to September, a whale shark tour puts you in the water beside the ocean’s gentle giants.
• Two islands in one day: The Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres combo pairs a protected bird sanctuary with island beach time for the nature lovers.
• Claim a lounger: Reserve a Playa Norte beach club day pass so your chair, shade, and drinks are waiting when you arrive.
• See the whole island: A guided sightseeing tour covers Punta Sur, the Ixchel ruins, and the viewpoints with a local who knows the stories.
• Sail into the sunset: End the day on a sunset cruise with the sky doing its thing over the Caribbean.

Relax at Playa Norte

Playa Norte (North Beach) is the star: powder-white sand, shallow calm water you can wade out in, and palm-tree shade.

It’s a five-minute walk from the ferry, so it’s easy to hit first or save for the end. It’s also one of the safest swimming beaches in Mexico, which makes it ideal for families.

Drive to Punta Sur and the Temple of Ixchel

The southern tip is all dramatic cliffs, turquoise views, and a sculpture garden.

It’s home to the ruins of the Temple of Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility and medicine, and it’s the first place in Mexico to catch the sunrise.

Watch for the iguanas sunning themselves on the rocks. Small entrance fee, big payoff.

• Hours: Open daily, roughly 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The gate sometimes opens earlier, but plan around those core hours to be safe.

• How long you need: Give yourself about 30 to 45 minutes. That’s enough to walk out to the ruins, wander the sculpture garden and cliffside path, snap your photos, and soak in the views without feeling rushed.

Visit the Turtle Farm (Tortugranja)

About 20 minutes from town, the Tortugranja turtle sanctuary protects sea turtles at every life stage for a small entrance fee.

Depending on the season, you may see baby turtles by the hundred. It’s a favorite with kids.

Here’s what you need to know before you go:

• Hours: Open daily, roughly 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
• Cost: About 30 pesos (around $3 USD). Bring cash.
• How long you need: Plan on 30 to 45 minutes. It’s a small sanctuary, so you can see the tanks, the outdoor pens, and feed the turtles without needing much more time than that.

It’s an easy, affordable stop that fits right into the golf cart loop, and one of the most kid-friendly things to do on the island.

Snorkel MUSA and the Reefs

The waters here are famous. Snorkel tours run from the Lighthouse reef down to Manchones reef and the MUSA underwater sculpture museum, an art gallery beneath the sea.

Garrafón Reef Park on the south end is the easy all-in-one option. Whale shark swims run seasonally, roughly June through September, and are best booked as a tour from Cancun.

Wander Centro and the Malecón

Downtown (Centro) is pedestrian-friendly, colorful, and covered in murals.

Walk Avenida Hidalgo for shops and restaurants, grab a photo at the big Isla Mujeres sign on the Malecón, and browse the handicrafts, hammocks, and silver.

Watch the Sunset at North Beach

If you’re not rushing for an early ferry, stay for it. Grab a drink from a beach club or the local Oxxo, plant yourself on Playa Norte, and watch one of the best sunsets in the Mexican Caribbean before you sail back.

Most of the best food sits right in walkable downtown.

You can do it for less if you pack light and skip the beach club, or more if you add a snorkel or whale shark tour. Either way, it’s one of the best-value days in the whole region.

Should You Stay Overnight Instead?

A day trip covers the highlights, but Isla Mujeres is even better once the day-trippers leave. If you fall in love with it (many people do), consider basing here for a night or two.
