I am so over traditional holiday foods like turkey and dressing, collard greens, and mac and cheese, and my family getting on my last nerve.

I have always wanted to spend Christmas in a warm destination, leaving the dirty kitchen in exchange for a beach or somewhere I would be a priority.

So, the million-dollar question is, where is hot in December?

So check out my list of warm places in October and November where you will only need to pack your bathing suits and sunscreen.

Hottest Countries in December To Visit

While traveling during the last ten days of December means crowds and exorbitant prices throughout much of the world, the first two weeks of December are great for travel because the holiday airfares and hotel rates are still low.

Enough of me talking; let’s get started with where it’s hot in December for warm weather, food, food, and more food, and maybe a beach or two:

1. Jamaica

Weather: Daily high temperatures are around 84°F, rarely falling below 80°F or exceeding 87°F.

Jamaica is the Caribbean’s third-biggest island and has long been a great option for U.S. travelers looking for warm water and stunning beaches.

December is the start of the dry season, and with average temperatures in the 80s and low rainfall, it’s a welcome chance to shake off the winter chill with blue skies and sunshine.

From the open-air markets and colonial landmarks in Kingston and Montego Bay to the laid-back vibe on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach, Jamaica something to suit every traveler’s style.

Vacation in true Caribbean fashion by lounging on the miles of beaches along the Ocho Rios coastline. You’ll want to take breaks to taste some local rum, sip a Red Stripe, sample some famous Blue Mountain coffee, or dig into a plate of traditional jerk chicken.

What to do: My trip to Jamaica was a blast! I lounged on Seven Mile Beach in Negril, soaking up the sun and crystal-clear water.

We also climbed Dunn’s River Falls, which was nerve-wracking but totally worth the view. The food was incredible; I couldn’t get enough of the spicy jerk chicken from roadside stands.

I took a relaxing bamboo raft ride down the Martha Brae River one chill day. In Kingston, we danced the night away to reggae beats.

And the snorkeling at Montego Bay Marine Park? Mind-blowing colorful fish everywhere! Jamaica’s laid-back vibe and natural beauty left me wanting more. What would you do first if you visited?

Don’t miss a visit to the Luminous Lagoon, one of the few places in the world where the conditions are just right for swimming and boating in a bioluminescent bay lit up by tiny, harmless dinoflagellates.

2. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Weather: the average temperature in the coastal areas is around 30°C (86°F), while in the mountains, it’s around 18-22°C (64-72°F).

One of the best December travel destinations for me is Costa Rica!

I love Costa Rica, specifically Santa Teresa, a small undeveloped town not packed with tourists like many of the other cities in Costa Rica.

My husband and I visit Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, every year and there is a reason we return year after year.

The first thing I always do is hit the beach—the waves are no joke, perfect for surfing. I’m no pro, but I took a lesson and managed to stand up a few times. I felt like a total champ!

The sunsets in Costa Rica are insane. Grab a cold Imperial beer and just chill on the beach, watching the sky turn all sorts of crazy colors. It’s hands down the best way to end a day.

What to do: One morning, I rented an ATV and explored the bumpy roads around town. It was a bit scary at first, but so much fun once I got the hang of it. I found this hidden waterfall and took a refreshing dip – talk about an off-the-beaten-path experience!

The food scene will surprise you. I had some of the best fish tacos of my life at a tiny beachfront shack. And the fresh fruit smoothies? I couldn’t get enough of them.

Try a yoga class at Florblanca Resort. Doing downward dog while listening to the waves was pretty special.

Santa Teresa has a cool, laid-back vibe that’s hard to describe. It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay for a few days and end up staying for weeks.

There are enough outdoor activities to fill several vacations, ranging from ziplining through the rainforest canopy to whitewater rafting to rainforest safaris and perhaps even a glimpse of the Arenal volcano in action.

With average highs in the low 80s, you’ll be able to enjoy them all.

Everywhere you go, Costa Rica casts its spell—don’t be surprised if you fall in love with the “”pura vida”” lifestyle and never want to leave.

Where to Stay in Santa Teresa

Nestled along the pristine shores of the Pacific Ocean, Florblanca invites you to experience a harmonious blend of luxury, nature, and relaxation.

3. Los Cabos, Mexico

Weather: Daily high temperatures decrease by 3°F, from 82°F to 79°F, rarely falling below 73°F or exceeding 87

There is something extremely special about celebrating the holidays in México.  The festive season lasts for two months and includes many holy days not celebrated in the U.S.

The month-long holiday starts December 12, honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe, and ends January 6, which remembers Los Tres Reyes Magos (the three wise men).

The town square in Cabo San Lucas, Plaza, is filled with holiday-themed ornaments and decorations of every color that will surely impress your entire family.

The plaza also features a large Christmas tree that is decorated to perfection and a beautiful nativity scene.

What to do: Christmas in Los Cabos will include art, music, food tastings, and recreations of events surrounding the birth of Christ.

If you are not religious, there are plenty of activities for you as well, particularly the annual food and wine festival.

The holiday season also coincides with the start of whale watching season in Los Cabos, in which tourists migrate south to see grays, humpbacks, and other whales on the way to their traditional winter breeding grounds off the coast of Baja California Sur.

The rainy season is over and the warm temperatures are ideal for enjoying the best of what Cabo San Lucas has to offer.

Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is located in Pedregal, a neighborhood in Cabo San Lucas, and is in the entertainment district and on the beach.

The Arch and Land’s End are notable landmarks, and the area’s natural beauty can be seen at Lover’s Beach and Medano Beach.

Puerto Paraiso Mall and Cabo San Lucas Country Club are two other recommended places to visit.

Explore all the area has to offer, with parasailing, mountain climbing, and ziplining.

4. Maui, Hawaii

Weather: December on Maui is the perfect escape from cold weather. Daytime temperatures remain comfortable in the low-80s and rarely drop below 70 at night.

Maui also makes my list as one of the top December travel destinations. You’ll find the island of Maui decked with lights, ornaments, and Christmas cheer.

Maui is already known for the kindness of its people, so the holidays are especially filled with warmth and Aloha.

As you make your Christmas vacation plans, I want to share some fun ideas for celebrating the holiday season in Maui.

What to do: Your first stop with the family is to see Lahaina’s famous banyan tree wrapped in Christmas lights.

The beautiful banyan tree will be wrapped in thousands of Christmas lights and the banyan tree can be located off Front Street in Lahaina town.

In keeping with tradition, Lahaina’s historic Banyan Tree will be lit at 6:30 p.m. with 6,500 colored Christmas lights from December 2nd to January 5th, 2024.

Keiki activities will kick off at noon with Santa’s arrival at the North Pole. Other activities include cookie decorating, face painting, and Christmas crafts.

You are also invited to come out and meet Banyan Snowman arriving at 4 pm. He is donated and carved on-site by Maui Ice Company. Parents, bring your cameras for this great photo opportunity.

Christmas is a great time to go shopping in Maui. Consider buying locally made crafts and artwork for gifts.  Lahaina has many shops, and Hawaii is one of the best warm places to visit in December.

We also like Whalers Village in Kaanapali and the Shops at Wailea in Wailea.

Where to Stay in Maui

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is located in Wailea, a neighborhood in Kihei, and is next to a golf course and on the beach.

While the natural beauty of Wailea Beach and Polo Beach can be enjoyed by anyone, those looking for an activity can check out Maalaea Harbor.

Keawakapu Beach North and Maluaka Beach are two other recommended places to visit. Discover the area’s water adventures with water skiing and parasailing nearby, or enjoy the great outdoors with mountain biking and ecotours.

5. Belize

Weather: December is one of the most popular months to visit Belize, with cool and dry weather. The average temperature is around 79°F (26°C), with lows around 70°F (21°C).

It’s nearing the end of October and fall is in full swing with stunning foliage and cool crisp nights,  but with winter just around the corner, now is the time to start planning your winter escape from the upcoming cold season.

Imagine spending Christmas enjoying swimming around the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System.

A Christmas vacation in Belize will depend on if you are traveling with the kiddos or just the hubby.  If you are planning a family trip with children or teens, an all-inclusive concept can be a great option.

What to do: Start your trip exploring the ancient Mayan ruins at Xunantunich. Climbing to the top of El Castillo was a workout, but the view was breathtaking.

Then head to the coast and took a boat to Ambergris Caye. The snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve will blow your mind – swim with nurse sharks and stingrays!

On Christmas Eve, joined the local celebration in San Pedro, dancing to punta music and eating traditional rice and beans.

Try some cave tubing in the jungle. Floating through dark caves with just a headlamp was both thrilling and eerily peaceful.

To wind down, spend a few days on the beach in Placencia, sipping coconut water and reading in a hammock. Belize in December was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation – I’d go back in a heartbeat!

Where to Stay in Belize

If you are traveling with just your hubby, try staying at Ka’ana Resort, which is located in the Jungles of Belize. This is not your typical beach resort in Belize, but Ka’ana Resort offers daily transportation to the Mayan ruins, rainforest, and Blue Hole.

At Ka’ana Resort, they offer luxury accommodations, adventure tours, and all-inclusive packages. The resort in San Ignacio, Belize, is at the doorstep of an ancient Maya city and has been inspired by Ka’ana’s name, which means heavenly place.

Ka’ana is ideal for those interested in discovering the rainforest, exploring Maya ruins, zip-lining through the jungle, rappelling down a waterfall, hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing.

You will leave Belize with warm memories of how you spent your Christmas vacation soaking up the sun and learning new cultures, and maybe you will make new lifelong friendships.

Weather: December in Cancun typically brings pleasant warm temperatures, creating a favorable climate for visitors. Average high temperatures range around 82 degrees

Cancun epitomizes the ultimate Mexican beach vacation. It’s packed with amazing resorts and hotels that cater to your every need from when you arrive until you check out.

If you’re traveling with beach lovers, Cancun is for you. Cancun also has one of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean and is filled with nightlife and restaurants.

However, from late December to April, it can be intensely busy. Thousands of people boogie on the pristine white sands, play volleyball, paraglide, and blast music.

What to do: The weather is perfect in December – warm and sunny, ideal for beach days.

Spend your mornings lounging on the white sands of Playa Delfines, swimming in the crystal-clear turquoise waters.

Take a boat trip to Isla Mujeres and rent a golf cart to explore the island – so much fun!

Don’t miss the chance to visit Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The ancient Mayan ruins are mind-blowing, especially El Castillo pyramid.

Back in Cancun, try your hand at parasailing – what a rush! For a taste of local culture, visit Mercado 28, haggling for souvenirs and trying authentic Mexican street food.

7. The Bahamas

The roughly 700 islands that make up the Bahamas lure millions of visitors to this paradise’s white sandy shores, fishing, and scuba diving excursions, and luxurious accommodations each year.

Just 182 miles (293 kilometers) off the coast of Miami, the coral archipelago of the Bahamas rises out of jewel-toned seas, complete with swaying palms, virgin beaches, and a richly Caribbean culture.

Most visitors to the islands find themselves in bustling Nassau or Freeport, where the cruise ships dock.

Explore hidden culinary gems in Nassau on a walking and tasting tour; get the inside scoop on local landmarks; or take a shore excursion from Freeport to the less-crowded part of Grand Bahama Island.

There, Lucayan National Park is home to one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems and visitors can stroll along miles of unspoiled beaches.

Those in search of an even more laid-back experience still should head to the Out Islands; thanks to tours that provide aquatic transportation, getting there couldn’t be easier. There are so many beautiful beaches to explore.

Watch for wildlife—including swimming piglets—on the Exumas, accessible via powerboat tour from Nassau; or cruise over to Rose Island for snorkeling or kayaking.

Regardless of your vacation agenda, there’s an island or a cay in the Bahamas that’s got you covered.

Meanwhile, history buffs can explore the ruins and artifacts from the colonial era and indigenous peoples like the Lucayan Indians.

The best time to visit the Bahamas is from mid-December to mid-April, the country’s peak season.

Though temperatures here are great year-round (they rarely dip below 60 degrees), the islands fall within the hurricane belt, so hurricanes may be a factor between June 1 and Nov. 30 (the Atlantic hurricane season).

If you love tropical islands, shake off the cold winter season in Mauritius. Located in the southern part of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has a tropical climate. Its lovely sun-kissed weather is what makes Mauritius a desirable tourist destination.

Since Mauritius is situated in the southwest wing of the Indian Ocean, it is profoundly affected by the southeast trade winds. The weather, however, remains cozily warm and delightfully pleasant the whole year long.

You can comfortably swim in the crystal clear waters surrounding the island due to the conveniently melting temperature of the water.

In short, it would be an equally good idea to pick any time of the year to make your travel plans to Mauritius.

Visiting Puerto Rico in December will be an incredible experience. The weather is perfect – warm and sunny with temperatures in the low 80s Fahrenheit.

December marks the start of the dry season, so enjoy plenty of clear days, which are ideal for exploring and spending time at the beach.

The island is vibrant and festive, with holiday decorations and celebrations adding an extra layer of excitement to my trip.

The blend of Spanish colonial charm and modern Caribbean flair was captivating. I loved how the island was less crowded than other Caribbean destinations, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience.

What to do: Vieques offers a perfect home base for exploring Puerto Rico in December, with its blend of natural wonders and laid-back island charm.

Start your adventure by kayaking through the mesmerizing Bioluminescent Bay, where the waters glow with an otherworldly blue light.

During the day, bask in the sun at pristine beaches like Sun Bay or snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Blue Beach.

For nature lovers, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge provides ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife spotting. History buffs can delve into the island’s past at the Fortin Conde de Mirasol Museum.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a day trip to nearby Culebra Island or plan a visit to the majestic El Yunque National Forest on the main island.

December also brings the vibrant Vieques Patron Saint Festival, a cultural treat not to be missed. For a change of pace, consider a day exploring Old San Juan’s cobblestone streets and historic sites.

Back on Vieques, try horseback riding along the beach, surf at Navio Beach, or simply relax and sample delicious local cuisine.

With its warm, dry weather, December is an ideal time to enjoy outdoor activities, but remember to book in advance as it’s peak tourist season.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences, Vieques provides a unique and memorable base for your Puerto Rican holiday.
