I need you to understand something about Belize before you start booking hotels.

It is not one destination. It is three completely different trips stacked on top of each other, and which hotel you choose depends entirely on which trip you’re actually taking.

You have the cayes, which are the Caribbean islands most people picture when they think of Belize.

You have the Cayo District in western Belize, which is full of jungle, Mayan ruins, and zip lines.

And you have the southern coast around Placencia and Hopkins, which is Central America’s most underrated stretch of beach.

Book a resort on Ambergris Caye when you really wanted the Cayo District, and you will be disappointed your entire trip.

I have been to Belize and stayed at Ka’ana Resort in western Belize.

That jungle experience is unlike anything I have experienced anywhere else in the Caribbean. I have traveled to over 65 countries, and Belize still surprised me with how different each area feels.

While everybody goes for the beaches I personally perferred the jungle.

I have seen many make expensive mistakes booking the wrong base, and I do not want you to spend unnecessary money.

Below, I’m breaking down the best hotels in Belize by area. I am also telling you what type of traveler each area is best for, because that matters more than any star rating.

One note for solo women considering Belize: yes, it is safe, and yes, I have thoughts on that too. Jump to the solo travel section below if that’s your main question.

Where to Stay in Belize — By Area

Most people go to Belize for the beach and the reef, and there is nothing wrong with that.

But I will tell you that my favorite part of Belize had nothing to do with the beach. It was the rainforest. It was quieter, more peaceful, and more interesting than anything I found on the cayes.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is where most first-time visitors land, and it makes sense as a starting point.

It is the largest island in Belize, San Pedro is the main town, and you have easy access to the Belize Barrier Reef right from the island.

The snorkeling and diving are genuinely world class and there is enough restaurant and bar activity in San Pedro that you never feel stranded.

If it is your first trip to Belize and you want the classic Caribbean island experience, start here. Just know going in that it is the most developed and most crowded of all the islands.

Caye Caulker

I went to Caye Caulker during lobster fest, and the energy on that island during the festival is something I still talk about.

Fresh lobster prepared every way you can imagine, music, locals and visitors all at the same tables, and a vibe that felt genuinely celebratory rather than touristy.

There are no cars on Caye Caulker, only golf carts and bikes, and the whole island runs on a go-slow philosophy that is not just a marketing phrase.

People actually live that way there. Outside of lobster fest, Caye Caulker is the more relaxed, less expensive alternative to Ambergris Caye.

The snorkeling and diving are excellent and the Belize Barrier Reef is right offshore.

I especially recommend it for solo travelers. It felt easy and safe and the kind of place where you can actually breathe.

The Cayo District — My Personal Favorite

I would spend most of my time here because this is where I would send anyone who asks me where to go in Belize.

I stayed at Ka’ana Resort in San Ignacio and it changed how I think about what a Belize trip can be.

The market at Ka’ana was one of those experiences that sticks with you.

Fresh local produce, authentic Belizean food, the kind of thing you do not get when you are sitting on a beach at an all inclusive resort.

I hired a private driver while I was based at Ka’ana and that decision made everything easier.

He drove me from Ka’ana out to the beach when I wanted it, which meant I got the best of both worlds without the logistical stress of figuring out transportation on my own.

If you are going to the Cayo District, hire a driver. It is worth every dollar or you can rent a golf cart to get around as well.

The other thing I did from Ka’ana that I would put on any Belize itinerary is the inland Blue Hole.

Not the famous Great Blue Hole offshore, which you do from Ambergris Caye by boat.

This is the smaller inland blue hole, a natural swimming hole located in the jungle, and it is one of the most unexpected and beautiful places I have been in all of my travels across 65 countries.

It is not heavily marketed. Most people miss it entirely because they are focused on the offshore version. Do not miss it.

The rainforest around the Cayo District was more peaceful than anywhere else I visited in Belize.

There is something about waking up in the jungle, hearing howler monkeys, and having ancient Mayan ruins within driving distance that no beach resort can replicate.

Ka’ana sits at the doorstep of Caracol and Xunantunich, two of the best Mayan archaeological sites in Belize, and the ATV Cave is one of the most extraordinary experiences in all of Central America.

I would go back to the Cayo District before I would go back to any of the cayes and that is saying something because I loved the cayes too.

Placencia

Placencia is on the southern mainland peninsula and it is what Ambergris Caye felt like before the crowds arrived.

I have stayed here, and the beach is beautiful, long, and uncrowded in a way that the cayes simply are not.

If you want a beach experience in Belize without the development and the noise of San Pedro, Placencia is where you should be.

The town itself is small and walkable, and the restaurant scene is more local and less tourist-facing than what you find on Ambergris Caye.

Hopkins

Hopkins is a small Garifuna village on the southern coast and it is the most culturally rich area I visited in Belize.

The Garifuna community here has maintained its traditions in a way that is genuinely moving to witness, and the food in Hopkins is some of the best in the country.

Hudut, the traditional Garifuna fish stew served with mashed plantain, is something I still think about.

Hopkins also has excellent diving and snorkeling access and it sits close to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a jaguar preserve and one of the most underrated things you can do in Belize.

For Black women travelers specifically, Hopkins feels like a place where you belong.

The Garifuna people are Afro-Indigenous and the community is warm and welcoming in a way that is hard to describe until you experience it yourself.

My Bottom Line on Where to Stay

If it is your first trip, start on Ambergris Caye. If you want the beach without the crowds, go to Placencia.

If you want culture and authenticity, go to Hopkins. If you want to go slow and eat lobster, go to Caye Caulker during lobster fest.

And if you want to understand what makes Belize genuinely different from every other Caribbean destination, go to the Cayo District.

Stay at Ka’ana, hire a driver, find the inland Blue Hole, and let the rainforest do what it does. That is the Belize trip I would take again tomorrow.

Ambergris Caye — Best for First-Timers and Beach Lovers

My favorite thing about Ambergris Caye is that there were Black and African travelers everywhere.

Not a few. A lot.

It felt like home in the most unexpected way, like I was running into long-lost cousins at every restaurant and on every beach.

If you have ever traveled somewhere and wondered whether you would feel welcome, Ambergris Caye answers that question before you even unpack.

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s largest and most visited island and it earns that reputation.

San Pedro is the main hub and it has restaurants, beach bars, boutiques, and enough energy that you never feel like you are stuck with nothing to do.

Getting around is by golf cart or bike and that alone sets the pace for the kind of trip this is.

The Belize Barrier Reef runs right along the island, which means world-class snorkeling and diving are minutes from your hotel door.

For a first trip to Belize, this is where I would tell you to start.

I have stayed at Las Terrazas and sent friends to Cayo Espanto and Matachica.

Las Terrazas Resort and Residences

My husband and I stayed at Las Terrazas, and it is the kind of hotel that makes you remember why you fell in love.

The food was exceptional, the service made you feel like you were the only guests there, and the property itself gives you enough space and beauty that you are not looking for anything outside of it.

We did not need to go anywhere else. Everything we needed was right there.

Las Terrazas sits on a private stretch of beach on Ambergris Caye, with reef views that never get old.

If your relationship needs a reset, if you have been running on empty and your husband has too, this is the hotel that does that work for you without you having to try very hard.

Book it and let the property take over.

Cayo Espanto

Cayo Espanto is in a category of its own, and I had two different sets of friends say they will only stay here when visiting Belize.

This is a private island resort with only seven villas. Seven!

That means when you are there you essentially have an island to yourself.

Every villa has a personal butler and a private chef and the whole property operates around whatever you need rather than around a schedule.

Friends of mine have gone to Cayo Espanto solo and said it is one of the best decisions they have ever made for themselves.

There is something powerful about choosing that level of care for yourself without waiting for someone to share it with.

If you are at a point in your life where you want to invest in an experience that is genuinely about you, this is it. The price reflects what it is and what it is, is extraordinary.

Matachica Resort and Spa

Matachica is the adults-only option on Ambergris Caye, and friends who have stayed here solo consistently describe it as the right balance between privacy and having a social scene available when you want it.

It sits on a secluded stretch of beach north of San Pedro which means you are away from the busiest part of the island but not so far that you feel cut off.

The design is boutique and the spa is the reason several of my friends keep going back.

For solo women specifically, Matachica works because it is small enough that you are not lost in a massive resort but developed enough that you have excellent food, great service, and activities without having to leave the property.

Adults only means the energy stays calm and the pool does not feel like a daycare. If you are planning a solo trip to Belize and you want Ambergris Caye as your base, Matachica is where I would send you.

Caye Caulker — Best for a Relaxed Low-Key Vibe

Caye Caulker does not have five-star resorts, and it is not trying to be that kind of destination.

This is the island you visit to experience Belize in its most unhurried, unfiltered form.

No cars, no chain hotels, no itinerary. Just golf carts, bikes, fresh seafood, and the go slow way of life that defines this place.

My husband and I went during lobster fest, and the energy on that island was something I still think about from the small shops lining the sandy paths, locals and visitors sharing tables, fresh lobster everywhere you turned, and the kind of people watching that reminds you why you travel in the first place.

If you need a true luxury resort experience, Caye Caulker is not your island and there is no shame in that.

A day trip from Ambergris Caye is genuinely worth doing so you can experience the vibe without committing to the accommodations.

But if you are comfortable with boutique, beachfront, and deeply local, I have found the best three options on the island for you.

Weezie’s Ocean Front Hotel

Weezie’s is ranked number one out of 41 hotels on Caye Caulker on TripAdvisor, and once you see the property, you understand why.

It sits on the eastern shore of the island with barrier reef views, two pools on the oceanfront property, a 250 foot pier extending into the Caribbean with a palapa at the end, and free use of paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, fishing rods, and snorkel gear for every guest.

The cafe and bar on the property serves breakfast and lunch made with fresh ingredients, many from their own garden, and the staff greets you like you are returning rather than arriving for the first time.

Weezie’s is located just outside the busiest part of town, removed enough for a quiet and relaxing environment but close enough to walk to restaurants, grocery stores, and local shops.

This is the closest thing to a boutique hotel experience that Caye Caulker has and it earns that description fully.

Island Magic Beach Resort

Island Magic Beach Resort is an upscale beachfront property owned by a local Belizean couple with 20 well appointed rooms and suites, a swimming pool, sun terrace, beach bar, and a restaurant.

It provides water sports booking and arranges snorkeling and diving excursions right from the beach.

The fact that it is locally owned matters on an island where the whole culture is built around community. You are not putting your money into a corporate property.

You are supporting a Belizean family business and the service reflects that.

This is the hotel I recommend if you want a social atmosphere, easy beach access, and the convenience of having a pool, a bar, and a restaurant all on the same property without having to go anywhere.

Colinda Cabanas

Colinda Cabanas sits on a quiet beachfront on the south end of the island with 14 colorful suites and cabanas right on the water.

Every guest gets free bikes, kayaks, and snorkel gear, and the beach here is gorgeous and sandy with a dock, hammocks, and loungers.

This is the most authentic Caye Caulker experience of the three.

The cabanas are colorful, the staff is warm, and the property puts you right at the water’s edge without anything feeling overdone or manufactured.

If you came to Caye Caulker to actually feel like you are on a Caribbean island rather than in a hotel that happens to be near one, Colinda is where you belong.

Cayo District (San Ignacio) — Best for Adventure and Mayan History

The Cayo District is where Belize stops being a beach destination and becomes something else entirely.

I have stayed here and I will tell you this straight if you only have time for one area of Belize and you want to understand what makes this country genuinely different from every other Caribbean destination, the Cayo District is your answer.

Ancient Mayan ruins within driving distance, the inland Blue Hole that almost nobody talks about, ATM Cave which is one of the most extraordinary experiences in all of Central America, howler monkeys in the trees outside your window, and a market culture that is real and local in a way that beach resort towns simply are not.

I hired a private driver when I was based here and that one decision made everything effortless. He drove me from my jungle lodge out to the beach when I wanted it and back again.

If you are coming to the Cayo District, hire a driver. It will change your entire experience.

The three hotels below are the best the district has to offer at the luxury level. Each one is completely different and the right one depends entirely on what kind of trip you are taking.

Ka’ana Resort — Tomiko’s Top Pick

Ka’ana is where I stayed and it is the property I recommend first to anyone asking about the Cayo District.

Ka’ana sits in the heart of the tropical jungle of western Belize at the doorstep of an ancient Maya city, with luxury accommodations, adventure tours, and all-inclusive packages.

The resort name means heavenly place and the property earns that description from the moment you arrive.

What I remember most is the market at Ka’ana.

Fresh local produce, authentic Belizean food, the kind of experience that puts you inside the culture rather than observing it from a distance.

The spa is excellent, the restaurant uses ingredients from their own organic garden, and the service is personal in a way that larger resorts simply cannot replicate with only 17 rooms.

Add in easy access to Caracol, Xunantunich, and the ATM Cave from the property and you have everything you need without ever feeling like you are being rushed through a checklist.

The Lodge at Chaa Creek

The Lodge at Chaa Creek sits on a 400-acre private nature reserve 30 minutes from San Ignacio and is one of Belize’s most awarded jungle lodges, a pioneer in ecotourism that was green before it was trendy.

If Ka’ana is the boutique luxury experience, Chaa Creek is the full immersion wilderness experience. You are not near the jungle here.

You are inside it. The reserve has hiking trails, a butterfly breeding center, a Mayan museum on the property, and the Macal River running along the grounds.

This is the hotel for the traveler who wants to feel completely removed from the modern world while still sleeping in a well appointed thatched cottage with excellent food and attentive service.

Chaa Creek consistently wins international awards for sustainability and the guest experience reflects a property that has been refining what it does for decades.

Mystic River Resort

Mystic River Resort carries a 9.8 guest review rating and features private plunge pools, couples dining experiences, a full service spa, complimentary breakfast, free airport transportation, yoga classes, and a serene riverside atmosphere.

This is the most romantic of the three Cayo District properties and the one I would send couples to who want the jungle experience without sacrificing comfort or intimacy.

The riverside setting is stunning, the plunge pools make every room feel private, and the spa treatments use locally sourced ingredients from the surrounding jungle.

If Chaa Creek is for the adventurer and Ka’ana is for the luxury traveler with cultural curiosity, Mystic River is for the couple who came to Belize to reconnect and wants the jungle as their backdrop without having to go far from the room to find something extraordinary.

Hopkins — Best for Garifuna Culture and Authentic Belize

Hopkins is the area of Belize that most travelers skip and that is the single biggest mistake they make.

This is a Garifuna fishing village on the southern coast and it is the most culturally rich part of the country.

The Garifuna people are Afro-Indigenous and their presence in Hopkins is not a tourist performance. It is daily life.

Drum ceremonies, fresh seafood pulled from the water that morning, Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations in November that fill the streets with music and community, and a warmth from the people here that is different from anything you will find in the more developed resort areas.

For Black women travelers specifically, Hopkins feels like a place where you belong in a way that is hard to put into words until you experience it yourself.

The community here has maintained its identity and culture in a way that is genuinely moving to be around. I tell every Black woman who asks me about Belize to make sure Hopkins is on the itinerary.

The three hotels below are the best luxury options in the area and each one serves a different kind of traveler.

Seiri Del Mar

Seiri Del Mar sits just outside Hopkins Village on the tranquil shores of the Caribbean Sea with sweeping views of the Belize Barrier Reef, featuring five buildings with spacious beachfront villas ranging from one to three bedrooms, each sitting five to 75 feet from the water.

Guests who have stayed multiple times describe the villas as luxurious, spacious, and immaculately maintained, with a level of staff attentiveness that feels unmatched anywhere in Belize.

What sets Seiri Del Mar apart is how deeply connected it is to the Garifuna community around it.

The resort actively connects guests with Hopkins Village life, from drum ceremonies to fresh seafood markets to cultural celebrations.

This is the property I recommend for travelers who want the all-inclusive experience in Hopkins without sacrificing access to genuine Belizean culture.

Tours leave directly from the resort, the guides are deeply knowledgeable about Belize’s history and the surrounding jungle, and the pool bar culture here is lively and social in a way that the other two Hopkins properties are not.

If you want to meet other travelers and have a resort experience with structure and activities built in, Almond Beach is your property.

The Lodge at Jaguar Reef

The Lodge at Jaguar Reef has been the resort of choice for thousands of travelers for over twenty years, offering beachfront dining, a lounge bar, a kids pool, a swim up pool bar, kayaks, paddleboards, bicycles, and easy access to the natural wonders that have made Belize a world class adventure travel destination.

The Lodge is the most established property in Hopkins and its longevity tells you something important. Two decades of travelers returning to the same resort means it is doing something consistently right.

The setting is right on the beach, the suites are spacious and private, and the property is far enough from the center of Hopkins to feel secluded while still being close enough to walk into the village when you want it.

This is the right property for families or travelers who want a quiet beachfront base to explore from rather than a social resort atmosphere.

Placencia — Best for the Uncrowded Beach Experience

Placencia is the Belize that most people do not find on their first trip and that is exactly what makes it worth seeking out.

I have stayed here, and what struck me immediately was how much beach there is and how few people are on it.

This is a 16-mile-long peninsula on the southern mainland coast, and the sand is the kind you sink into, not the gritty, packed sand you find on the cayes.

The town of Placencia Village at the tip of the peninsula is small, walkable, and completely without pretension. Small restaurants, local bars, a beach that goes on longer than you can see from one end.

This is the area I recommend to travelers who have already done Ambergris Caye and want a different version of Belize.

It is also where I send couples who want a romantic beach trip without the noise and development of San Pedro.

The three hotels below are the best luxury options on the peninsula and each one is distinctly different from the others.

Naia Resort and Spa

Naia Resort and Spa was named Hotel of the Year by the Belize Tourism Board and sits within a private 224 acre community on the Placencia Peninsula along a mile of palm studded beach with 39 secluded beach houses each with breathtaking Caribbean Sea views.

The spa at Naia is the largest in Belize and it is built on a series of lagoon islands covered in lily pads, which sounds like something you would read in a novel and turns out to be exactly as extraordinary as it sounds.

The typical Naia guest is on a wellness journey, and the resort is designed around that spa, fitness center, yoga studio, and a sunset kayak tour through the mangroves that frequently includes manatee sightings.

This is the property I would send a solo woman who is traveling for herself, who wants space, beauty, and a genuinely restorative experience rather than just a hotel room near a beach.

Prana Maya Island Resort

Prana Maya Island Resort sits on the pristine shores of Placencia Caye, a secluded private island just five minutes by boat from Placencia Village, and is designed as an eco-conscious escape rooted in the energy and culture of Belize.

It features 10 oceanfront open concept suites and multi-bedroom villas with private plunge pools facing the Caribbean Sea.

What makes Chabil Mar different from the other two properties is its location right at the edge of Placencia Village.

It is one of the best values among luxury properties in Belize considering how much space you get, and the closest luxury resort to Placencia Village, making it the best option for travelers who want to explore the village on foot or by bicycle.

The villas are large, fully equipped with kitchens, and individually decorated with local Belizean art and hardwoods. If you want the luxury villa experience with the village right outside your door, this is your property.

Things to Do in Belize

Belize is not a sit-on-the-beach-and-do-nothing destination, though you absolutely can do that if you want to.

My husband and I explored the Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich, went cave tubing, visited the inland Blue Hole, and drove down to Placencia for the Lobster Festival all in one trip.

The country packs an extraordinary amount of variety into a very small geographic footprint and that is part of what makes it so easy to love.

My single best piece of advice for getting around and seeing everything is to hire a private driver.

We did this and it was worth every dollar.

Having someone who knows the roads, knows which tours to book and which to skip, and can get you from a jungle ruin to a Caribbean beach in the same afternoon is the kind of logistics that makes a trip feel effortless rather than exhausting.

If that is not in your budget, rental cars are available and the main highways are manageable.

Mayan Ruins

The Mayan ruins are what set Belize apart from every other Caribbean destination.

This was the center of the ancient Maya Civilization and the concentration of temples, underground ritual chambers, and archaeological sites here is extraordinary.

Xunantunich and Caracol are the two I would put at the top of any itinerary. Altun Ha and Lamanai are also worth the trip if you have the time.

These are not rope-off-the-area tourist exhibits.

You can climb the temples, walk through the chambers, and stand at the top with views of the jungle stretching in every direction.

Cave Tubing

Cave tubing is one of those experiences that sounds gimmicky until you are actually floating through an ancient Mayan ceremonial cave system in an inner tube with a headlamp on your head.

Barton Creek Cave in the Cayo is one of the best versions of this and it is the kind of thing you will be talking about for years.

A trained guide accompanies you and the experience is accessible for most fitness levels.

The Inland Blue Hole

This is the one I want to make sure you do not skip and most visitors do skip it because they are focused on the famous offshore Great Blue Hole.

The inland Blue Hole is a freshwater swimming hole located 12 miles south of Belmopan right on the Hummingbird Highway.

You walk down a short flight of stairs into a cool natural pool inside a cave system in the middle of the jungle. It is completely unexpected and genuinely one of the most beautiful places I have been in all of my travel.

It is part of the St. Herman’s Cave national park system and entry is inexpensive. Put it on your itinerary.

Zip Lining

The longest zip line in Central America is at the Mayflower Bocawina National Forest near Silk Grass Village on the Southern Highway.

It runs 2,300 feet across 12 platforms through 7,000 acres of lowland rainforest with waterfalls visible along the route.

The final zip lasts over 30 seconds. If you are based in Hopkins or Placencia this is a straightforward day trip.

The Belize Lobster Festival

Lobster season opens June 15 and the coastal towns celebrate with festivals that run through mid-July in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Placencia.

I went to the Caye Caulker version and the energy on that island during those days is something I still talk about.

Lobster on the grill, lobster ceviche, lobster kebabs, lobster chowder, lobster nachos. Prices are at their lowest because the season has just opened and the volume of lobster available is enormous.

If your travel dates are flexible and you can time a trip around this, do it.

Wildlife and Nature

Belize has jaguars, pumas, howler monkeys, keel-billed toucans, and over 500 species of birds.

Most jungle lodges in the Cayo District have nature trails and some have iguana or butterfly breeding programs on the property.

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary near Hopkins is the world’s first jaguar preserve and one of the most underrated things you can do in the southern part of the country.

The Belize Zoo near Belize City is worth a stop if you are passing through and want to see native wildlife up close before heading to your final destination.

Is Belize Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

I have traveled to over 65 countries and I have been to Belize both with my husband and on my own. Here is my straight answer:

Belize is safe for solo female travelers when you stay in the tourist areas, use common sense, and do not skip travel insurance.

The resort zones on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, Hopkins, and the Cayo District are all well traveled and generally very safe.

The one area I tell solo women to move through quickly rather than linger in is Belize City.

It is a port city with a higher crime rate than the rest of the country and there is simply no reason to overnight there when your final destination is one of the areas above.

Book directly to your island or your jungle lodge, take a domestic flight or a water taxi, and skip Belize City entirely.

For Black women travelers specifically, Belize is one of the most welcoming countries I have visited anywhere in the world.

When I was on Ambergris Caye I looked around and saw Black and African travelers everywhere. It felt like home in a way I was not expecting.

Hopkins in the south has a significant Afro-Indigenous Garifuna community and the warmth there is something that is genuinely hard to describe until you experience it firsthand.

The biggest practical safety concern in Belize is not crime. It is infrastructure. Roads in rural areas are rough. Boat taxis between islands can be basic.

Medical facilities outside of Belize City are limited and a medical evacuation to the United States can cost $50,000 or more. This is why travel insurance is not optional for Belize.

I travel with Travelex and I never skip it for this destination. Get a quote before you book anything else.

Best Time to Visit Belize

Dry season runs from November through April and this is the most popular window for a reason. You get sunny skies, calm Caribbean water, and the best conditions for snorkeling and diving.

February and March are peak season with the highest hotel prices and the most crowds on Ambergris Caye.

If your budget allows it, this is when Belize is at its best.

May through October is rainy season. June through August brings afternoon showers and higher humidity but the country does not shut down.

The reef is still diveable on most days, the Cayo District ruins are accessible, and hotel prices drop significantly.

I have traveled in shoulder season and found it genuinely enjoyable as long as you are flexible and not counting on perfect beach weather every single day.

September is the one month I tell travelers to approach carefully. It is hurricane season and the riskiest month to travel in terms of weather disruption.

If you want one specific reason to book around a date, go for the Lobster Festival. It runs late June through mid-July across San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Placencia.

I went to the Caye Caulker version and it is one of the best food experiences I have had in all of my travel. Fresh lobster prepared every way imaginable, music everywhere, and the kind of celebration that pulls locals and visitors together at the same tables.

For the Cayo District, December through February gives you the best hiking and ruins weather. Cool mornings, dry trails, and the clearest visibility at the ATM Cave.

How to Get Around Belize

Getting around Belize requires a plan before you arrive because the country does not have one simple answer for transportation. Here is how it actually works.

You fly into Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City.

From there you have two options to reach your destination. Domestic flights on Tropic Air or Maya Island Air connect Belize City to Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, and Dangriga in under 30 minutes and are worth every dollar.

Water taxis from Belize City to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are cheaper but take 75 to 90 minutes and can be choppy depending on conditions.

On the islands, golf carts are the main transport on Ambergris Caye and bikes are the way around Caye Caulker.

Most resorts on both islands arrange airport or ferry transfers so you never have to figure out the logistics on your own.

On the mainland, this is where I want to give you a piece of advice from my own experience. Hire a private driver. I did this when I was based at Ka’ana in the Cayo District and it changed everything.

My driver took me to the Mayan ruins, to the inland Blue Hole, and drove me out to the coast when I wanted a beach day.

He knew the roads, he knew which tours were worth booking, and he handled every logistical detail without me having to think about it.

The cost is reasonable and the value is enormous. Ask your hotel to recommend one they trust before you arrive.

If you want to move between the Cayo District and the coast, rental cars are available but mainland roads outside of the Western Highway and Hummingbird Highway can be rough and unpaved in places.

A driver who knows the roads is a significantly better option than renting a car and figuring it out yourself.

FAQ: Where to Stay in Belize

Final Thoughts — Which Area of Belize Is Right for You?

After multiple trips to Belize across different areas and different travel companions, here is how I would point you based on the kind of trip you are actually taking.

If it is your first trip and you want the classic Belize experience, start on Ambergris Caye. You get the reef, the beach, the energy of San Pedro, and the easiest logistics of any area in the country.

Las Terrazas is where I would put couples. Matachica is where I would send solo women. Cayo Espanto is for the traveler who wants to invest in something genuinely extraordinary.

If you want beach without the development and noise, go to Placencia. Naia is for the woman traveling for wellness and restoration.

Prana Maya is for the traveler who wants a private island experience without being geographically isolated. Chabil Mar is for couples and families who want the village at their doorstep.

If you want to go slow and eat lobster in a setting that still feels real and unhurried, go to Caye Caulker. Go during the Lobster Festival if you can time it.

If you want to understand what makes Belize genuinely different from every other Caribbean destination, go to the Cayo District.

Stay at Ka’ana. Hire a driver. Find the inland Blue Hole. Let the rainforest do what it does.

And if you want the most culturally rich, most underrated, most overlooked part of Belize, go to Hopkins. This is the area I think about most when Belize comes up in conversation.

The Garifuna community, the food, the drumming, the warmth from the people there. Seiri Del Mar puts you right at the center of all of it.

Whatever you choose, get travel insurance before you book anything else and do not overnight in Belize City. Those two decisions alone will make your trip significantly better.
