My husband and I go to Santa Teresa annually, and I even got engaged here at the now-closed Florblanca Resort.

This small surf town sits on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, and it has been on every travel influencer list for years.

Long dirt roads, howler monkeys at sunrise, waves that draw surfers from all over the world.

This same stretch of coast now has some of the most impressive boutique hotels I have stayed in anywhere in Central America.

Private plunge pools overlooking the Pacific.

Open-air spa treatments with locally sourced ingredients. Beachfront restaurants that would hold their own in Miami.

Santa Teresa is still a surf town. You will still take a ferry and bump down a gravel road to get here. But the hotels have caught up to the hype and then some.

Where to Stay in Santa Teresa: Know the Areas First

Before you start comparing hotels, you need to understand the layout of Santa Teresa.

This is not a town with a clear downtown and a beach strip.

It is one long road that runs along the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula and the area you choose to stay in will completely change your experience.

Here is what you need to know about each area before you decide to book your vacation.

Playa Carmen

This is where most first time visitors land and for good reason. Playa Carmen sits at the center of everything.

The beach is wide and accessible, the surf is manageable for beginners and intermediates, and you are walking distance from the best restaurants, surf shops, and grocery stores in Santa Teresa.

Esencia Hotel and Villas are both here. If you want to be in the middle of the action without needing a car for every meal, Playa Carmen is your spot.

Playa Santa Teresa

Running north of Carmen, this is where the surf scene lives. Hotel Nantipa sits on this stretch and it is one of the most beautiful beachfront positions in the entire area.

The waves are stronger here and the beach is more dramatic but it can be rocky in sections so swimming requires a short walk depending on the tide.

This area has a more elevated, settled in feel compared to the buzzy energy of Carmen.

Mal Pais

Head south past Carmen and the road quiets down considerably. Mal Pais has held onto its original fishing village character better than anywhere else in the Santa Teresa area.

The beaches here get serious wave action which makes it a draw for experienced surfers but not ideal if you want calm water for swimming.

You will need a car to get anywhere from Mal Pais. The trade off is that it feels like a completely different destination. Quieter, more local, genuinely removed from the tourist circuit.

Playa Hermosa

Sitting north of Playa Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa is one of the least developed stretches in the area. Blue Mist Hotel is located here, 100 meters from the beach.

If your goal is to get away from people and have a stretch of sand largely to yourself, this is where you go.

The Hillside Properties

LALOON Luxury Suites, Vista del Alma Boutique, and Mint Santa Teresa are all elevated above the main road on the hillside.

The views from these properties are on another level. You are looking out over the Pacific with nothing in between. The trade-off is access.

You need a 4×4 or ATV to reach them comfortably and you are not walking to dinner. If privacy and views are the priority, that trade-off is absolutely worth it.

If you want to be able to walk out your door and be in the middle of Santa Teresa, stay on the main road instead.

Vista del Alma has ten villas and each one is named after a crystal or semi-precious stone.

The design is modern tropical with a lot of natural wood, wide terraces, and views that stop you mid-sentence.

Every villa has strong air conditioning, fast Wi-Fi, a king bed, and a large bathroom. The basics are completely solid. But what you are really paying for is the position and the quiet.

From the hillside vantage point you are looking out over the Pacific with nothing in your sightline. No road, no other properties, no noise from town.

Vista del Alma is adults only and it shows in the atmosphere.

This is a property designed for people who came to Santa Teresa to actually rest. Honeymooners find it. Solo women who want complete privacy find it.

Couples who have been promising themselves a proper trip for two years and finally made it happen find it.

A few practical things to know before you book. There is no full-service dinner restaurant on site, so plan to drive into town for evening meals.

Location is genuinely strong. Esencia sits 100 meters from Santa Teresa Beach with direct access, which puts you closer to the water than most hotels on this list.

The surrounding area has restaurants within walking distance so you are not dependent on the hotel for every meal.

The on-site restaurant El Facon serves Latin American food and the hotel can arrange spa services, surf lessons, ATV tours, horseback riding on the beach, and day trips to Cabo Blanco National Park and Tortuga Island.

For a family trip or a group of friends who want a home base with activities built in, this is the property that makes that easy.

Esencia does not try to be the flashiest hotel in Santa Teresa. It just does everything right at a price point that makes sense for longer stays.

Hotel Santa Teresa By The Beach — Best Value Beachfront

Hotel Santa Teresa By The Beach is the property that keeps showing up in reviews from people who did their research, compared six options, and chose well.

It was fully renovated in 2023: rooms, bathrooms, and common areas and the difference from what it was before is significant.

The breakfast is not a sad continental tray.

It is made to order eggs, Gallo Pinto, fresh fruit, local cheese, and fresh bread. Guests consistently call it out as one of the best hotel breakfasts in Santa Teresa.

The location is the other reason this hotel makes sense. It sits 50 meters from Playa Carmen right at the center of Santa Teresa.

You can walk to the best restaurants, surf schools, and shops on the main strip in under five minutes. If you want to be in the middle of everything without paying luxury resort rates, this is exactly the right position.

The hotel has partnered with Sansa Airlines to offer guests a 10% discount on flights to Cobano, which is a nice practical perk worth knowing when you book.

The airport is 20 minutes away on a fully paved road, so getting here is easier than reaching most other properties on this list.

Chef Olivier Palazzo runs the restaurant with a menu that blends Mediterranean flavors and French technique using ingredients that are as local as possible.

Blue Mist is located 100 meters from Playa Hermosa with a private beach area, outdoor pool, and an on-site restaurant serving local, Asian, and international cuisine.

All rooms have balconies.

It is an adults-only property, which keeps the energy calm, and it sits slightly outside the main Santa Teresa strip so it is quieter than properties in Carmen.

This is a solid mid-luxury option when LALOON and Vista del Alma are outside your budget but you still want the adults-only atmosphere.

Best Hotels for Solo Female Travelers in Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is one of the friendliest solo travel destinations in all of Costa Rica.

The town is active during the day, social in the evenings, and the surf culture keeps things relatively low-key compared to party destinations like Tamarindo.

For solo women who want total privacy and zero social obligation, LALOON Luxury Suites and Vista del Alma are the top picks.

Both are adults-only, both have private plunge pools, and neither is a property where you will feel out of place on your own.

The hillside locations also mean you are naturally removed from main road noise.

If you want the option to connect with other travelers, Mint Santa Teresa is only five rooms and attracts an international, design-conscious crowd.

It is adults-only and feels like a small community. Hotel Fermata, the newest property on this list, is also designed for connecting with both expats and other solo travelers.

Hotel Nantipa works beautifully for solo women at the luxury level. It is beachfront, the staff is professional, and the Manzú restaurant means you can eat well at the hotel without needing a dinner companion.

Safety note: Santa Teresa is a tourist-oriented destination. The main drag is busy and well-lit in the evening.

How to Get to Santa Teresa

There are three ways to reach Santa Teresa from San Jose.

Know your options before you book, because the right choice depends on your budget, timeline, and how much you want to deal with.

Drive and take the ferry. Rent a car in San Jose, drive to Puntarenas (about 1.5 hours), take the ferry to Paquera (1.5 hours), then drive another 1.5 hours to Santa Teresa. Total time is around 4.5 to 5 hours.

This is the best option if you want flexibility to explore the Nicoya Peninsula and plan to rent a car anyway, which I strongly recommend given the roads.

Book a shared shuttle. Companies like Tropical Tours run daily departures from San Jose and Liberia to Santa Teresa for around $50 per person.

The total trip takes 5 to 6 hours. You do not need to navigate anything yourself, but you are on their schedule.

Fly domestically to Cobano Airport. SANSA and Costa Rica Green Air both fly from San Jose to Cobano in about 30 minutes.

A taxi from Cobano to most Santa Teresa hotels runs around $40 and takes 20 minutes. This is by far the fastest option if you want to maximize time on the ground.

Whichever way you get there, book your car rental in advance. You need a 4×4 for Santa Teresa, especially if you are staying at a hillside property or visiting during the green or rainy season.

Best Time to Visit Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa has three distinct seasons, and the right time to visit depends on what you are optimizing for.

December through April is the dry season. Sunny days, minimal rain, ideal beach conditions. This is peak season and the most popular time to visit. December and January fill up fast. Book hotels early if you are traveling then.

May through August, plus November, is the green season. Mostly sunny days with rain showers at night. The vegetation is lush, the crowds are lighter, and hotel rates drop.

This is actually a great time to visit if you do not mind occasional afternoon showers. Most properties stay open.

September and October are the rainy season. This is when it rains not light showers but sustained rain. Some smaller hotels and restaurants close during this period. Not recommended unless you are specifically chasing empty beaches and the lowest rates of the year.

For solo women travelers: dry season is the easiest time to navigate Santa Teresa, especially if it is your first visit. Green season is fine for experienced travelers who plan ahead.

Renting a Car in Santa Teresa: What You Need to Know

Do not skip the car rental. Santa Teresa is not a walkable destination the way beach towns in Mexico might be.

The roads are unpaved in large sections, the hillside hotels require real 4×4 capability, and the distances between Carmen, Mal Pais, and Hermosa add up quickly.

You need a 4×4. Not because it looks adventurous, but because the roads require it, particularly during green and rainy season when gravel turns to mud.

If you are staying at LALOON, Vista del Alma, or Mint Santa Teresa on the hill, a 4×4 is non-negotiable.

Best Things to Do in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Santa Teresa is one of those rare destinations that works for completely different types of travelers at the same time.

You can spend your entire trip in the water chasing waves, or you can spend it in a yoga shala doing nothing faster than a sun salutation.

Most people end up doing both, and that is why I love this place.

Go Surfing

Santa Teresa has three main surf breaks and several more just south in Mal Pais. Playa Santa Teresa is the one that draws experienced surfers.

The waves here are faster, hollower, and more powerful, especially when a solid swell rolls through. This is not a beginner beach on those days.

Just north of Santa Teresa sits Playa Hermosa with gentler, more forgiving waves that work well for beginners and intermediates building confidence.

If you have never surfed before, start here and get a lesson before you try anything else. Most hotels can arrange lessons directly or point you to the right instructors.

Do Yoga

There is no shortage of yoga in Santa Teresa and the setting makes every class feel better than it should.

Hike to the Montezuma Waterfalls

A short ATV or car ride from Santa Teresa brings you to the entrance of the Montezuma Waterfalls. The hike in is hot so bring water, wear sunscreen, and start early before the midday heat sets in.

The payoff is a cool natural pool at the base of a massive cascade that makes the whole sweaty walk worth it.

Daredevils can climb up and jump off the waterfall but watch the rocks below carefully before you commit to that decision.

Cabo Blanco is one of the oldest nature reserves in Costa Rica and one of the most rewarding day trips from Santa Teresa.

The reserve is home to anteaters, white-tailed deer, capuchin monkeys, coyotes, and over 150 identified tree species. It is also a serious seabird sanctuary.

If you have any interest in wildlife or hiking in a genuinely protected environment rather than a tourist trail, Cabo Blanco deserves a full morning.

Santa Teresa is no longer a secret.

The roads are still rough, the monkeys are still loud, and the surf is still the main event, but the hotels have caught up in a serious way.

If I had to pick one hotel for a luxury solo trip, it is Hotel Nantipa. It has everything in one place, from the beach, the restaurant, the spa, the pool, and the staff know how to take care of you.

If I want total seclusion and the most dramatic ocean views, I go LALOON or Vista del Alma.

Both require a 4×4 and a higher budget, but the privacy is worth it.
