Florblanca Resort is still one of the most enchanting beachfront escapes on the Nicoya Peninsula, and in this review, I’m pulling back the curtain on exactly what makes it special (and where it might not be perfect).

My husband and I have visited Florblanca three times, long before Santa Teresa became the “it” destination, and it’s where he proposed at sunset.

Over the years, we’ve watched this little corner of paradise evolve while somehow keeping its barefoot luxury charm intact.

Florblanca Resort in Santa Teresa offers open-air villas with private plunge pools, outdoor rainforest showers, and enclosed bedrooms.

With only 11 villas, the property feels intimate and exclusive. Dining is farm-to-table in an open-air restaurant surrounded by the sound of waves and rustling palm trees.

The highlights? Sunrise yoga, spa days, and beach walks that end in golden-hour cocktails.

The only caveat is that it’s not for travelers needing air conditioning and closed walls. Wildlife and jungle breezes are part of the experience, and yes, the howler monkeys might help themselves to your minibar snacks if you forget to lock the fridge.

Every morning, I would pull back the white linen curtains to the sound of waves crashing in the distance and howler monkeys calling from the trees.

The living areas are completely open to the jungle, filled with natural light, hand-carved wooden furniture, and hammocks that somehow convince you to cancel all your afternoon plans.

The bathrooms are one of my favorite features.

They are open-air sanctuaries surrounded by lush greenery, stone basins, and rainfall showers under the sky. It feels intimate and wild all at once, like bathing in nature without sacrificing comfort.

Some villas include private plunge pools, perfect for cooling off in the afternoon or sipping wine under the stars. Every space feels intentional, from the handmade tiles to the organic cotton bedding.

Rates at Florblanca typically start around $750 per night and can go as high as $1,200 per night for the larger ocean-view villas during peak season.

It is absolutely a splurge, but one that feels justified the moment you step inside.

Nectar restaurant

The resort’s open-air Nectar restaurant serves sushi and seafood straight from the ocean, plus a menu ranging from burgers, and fresh fruit smoothies to a yummy chocolate soufflé

The atmosphere is casual — no need to change out of bathing suits and shorts before dinner.

The long wine list includes several lesser-known Central and South American labels. Sample a bottle or two while listening to the waves crashing a few yards away.

Breakfast is served daily from 7 to 11 a.m. Our early risers can enjoy aromatic and organic Costa Rican coffee in our restaurant starting at 6 a.m.

Costa Rica is famous for delectable tropical fruits such as papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, and bananas.  You will always be served fresh along with the veggies and fruit that are in season.

From healthy fruit smoothies to our traditional Pinto to our Banana Bread French Toast, the breakfast menu features both light and hearty plates to start your day.

Lunch is served from 12 noon- 3 pm. If you plan a day excursion, they are happy to prepare a box lunch for your afternoon tour.

The lunch menu is varied with a long list of choices. They have a number of healthy salads, burgers, sandwiches, and their famous fish tacos.  

The Bar menu will be from 3:30 until 6 pm.  The cocktails are unbelievable, especially the caipirinha; they are not to be missed while enjoying the unforgettable Costa Rica sunset.  

Dinner is served from 6 pm-9 pm where you will have a truly authentic culinary experience in our open-air dining room.

Dinner offers a variety of tasty salads, innovative appetizers, and delicious main courses with a heavy emphasis on seafood.  There is also a complete sushi menu.

How to get to Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Several transportation options are available to get to Santa Teresa, Costa Rica. If you prefer flying, the easiest way to reach Santa Teresa is to fly into Tambor Airport, which is located about 30 minutes away from the town.

You can fly domestically from the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose to Tambor.

Another option is to take a scenic drive from San Jose to Santa Teresa. The journey takes around 4-5 hours and allows you to soak in the beautiful landscapes of Costa Rica.

You can rent a car and drive yourself or hire a private transfer service.

Those who prefer a more adventurous route can take a public bus from San Jose to Santa Teresa. The bus journey takes approximately 6-7 hours and includes a ferry ride.

It’s a budget-friendly option and allows you to experience the local culture.

Once you arrive in Santa Teresa, transportation within the town is relatively easy. Taxis and rental bikes are available, or you can choose to walk around and explore the area on foot.

No matter your transportation option, the journey to Santa Teresa is part of the adventure and sets the stage for an unforgettable stay at Florblanca Resort.

Driving To Santa Teresa

After landing in San Jose, you can rent a car from the airport and drive to Santa Teresa, even though I DO NOT suggest driving.

The quickest way is to take Route 27 for about an hour and thirty minutes.  Once you arrive in Puntarenas, you must take the ferry across the gulf to the small town of Paquera.

The ferry schedules are seasonal, so confirm the times before arriving.

Once you arrive in Paquera, which is approximately an hour and a half, follow the main road to Mal Pais for another hour or so, which will put you in Playa Carmen.

Flying To Santa Teresa

After taking the ferry one too many times, I suggest simply taking a domestic flight from San Jose Airport to Tambor. 

This is the easiest and quickest way to get to Santa Teresa. The flights run daily and they are only 25 minutes. 

Two airlines have daily flights to Santa Teresa – Sansa & Nature Air. Once you arrive, it’s only a 40 – min drive to Florblanca. 

Florblanca also offers its guests private cars to and from the Tambor.
