Best Warm Places to Visit in December

While traveling during the last ten days of December means crowds and exorbitant prices throughout much of the world, the first two weeks of December are great for travel because the holiday airfares and hotel rates are still low.

Europe is all decked out for the holidays and locals seem to be a little friendlier vs. the summer months. In the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico, hurricane season is over, the weather is gorgeous, and there are free upgrades to be “got”.

Enough of me talking, let’s get started with where it’s hot in December for warm weather, food, food, and more food, and maybe a beach or two:

1. Jamaica

The Caribbean’s third-biggest island has long been a great option for U.S. travelers looking for warm water and stunning beaches.

From the open-air markets and colonial landmarks in Kingston and Montego Bay to the laid-back vibe on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach, Jamaica something to suit every traveler’s style.

Vacation in true Caribbean fashion by lounging on the miles of beaches along the Ocho Rios coastline. You’ll want to take breaks to taste some local rum, sip a Red Stripe, sample some famous Blue Mountain coffee, or dig into a plate of traditional jerk chicken.

The entire azure coastline offers myriad opportunities to swim and snorkel among the coral reefs and the abundance of marine life.

A tour guide is the best way to gain insight into the island’s musical history, with a visit to the Bob Marley Museum or even Marley’s hometown, Nine Mile.

Adventure-seekers can take their pick of activities such as ziplining through the jungle canopy; bamboo rafting; climbing the terraced Dunn’s River Falls; hiking to the top of Blue Mountain; or spelunking in one of the many limestone caves that dot the island nation.

Don’t miss a visit to the Luminous Lagoon, one of the few places in the world where the conditions are just right for swimming and boating in a bioluminescent bay lit up by tiny, harmless dinoflagellates.

Where to Stay in Jamaica

2. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

One of the best December travel destinations for me is Costa Rica!

I love Costa Rica and specifically Santa Teresa which is a small undeveloped town that is not packed with tourists.

Santa Teresa is packed full of adventure with thousands of acres of rainforests to go hiking, explore volcanoes, and of course, my favorite reason to visit Costa Rica is the incredible waterfalls.

Santa Teresa is on the southern tip of the Nicoya peninsula on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast.

Montezuma offers pristine, untrammeled beaches, spectacular waterfalls in the rainforest, and wildlife encounters at the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, the Curú Wildlife Refuge, and nearby Tortuga Island.

Postcard-perfect beaches; lush, protected rainforests; and a proud history of promoting conservation and eco-tourism have helped make the country a veritable paradise for active travelers and nature lovers—as well as Central America’s top travel destination.

Many tours begin in Costa Rica’s “Golden Triangle” and string together the most popular destinations: Arenal Volcano National Park and nearby La Fortuna, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, and Manuel Antonio National Park.

There are enough outdoor activities to fill several vacations, ranging from ziplining through the rainforest canopy to whitewater rafting to rainforest safaris, and perhaps even a glimpse of the Arenal volcano in action.

Everywhere you go, Costa Rica casts its spell—don’t be surprised if you fall in love with the “”pura vida”” lifestyle and never want to leave.

Where to Stay in Santa Teresa

3. Los Cabos, Mexico

There is something extremely special about celebrating the holidays in México.   The festive season lasts for two months and includes many holy days that are not celebrated in the U.S.

The month-long holiday starts December 12, honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe, and ends January 6, which remembers Los Tres Reyes Magos (the three wise men).

The town square in Cabo San Lucas, Plaza, is filled with holiday-themed ornaments and decorations of every color that will surely impress your entire family.

The plaza is also home to a large Christmas tree that is decorated to perfection along with a beautiful nativity scene.

Christmas in Los Cabos will include art, music, food tastings, and recreations of events surrounding the birth of Christ.

If you are not a religious person there are plenty of activities for you as well, particularly the annual food and wine festival.

The holiday season also coincides with the start of whale watching season in Los Cabos, in which tourists migrate south to see grays, humpbacks, and other whales on the way to their traditional winter breeding grounds off the coast of Baja California Sur.

Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas

Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal is located in Pedregal, a neighborhood in Cabo San Lucas, and is in the entertainment district and on the beach.

The Arch and Land’s End are notable landmarks, and the area’s natural beauty can be seen at Lover’s Beach and Medano Beach. Puerto Paraiso Mall and Cabo San Lucas Country Club are two other places to visit that come recommended.

Explore all the area has to offer with skydiving, mountain climbing, and ziplining.

4. Maui, Hawaii

Still can’t decide where to spend Christmas?  Maui also makes the list as one of the top December travel destinations.  You’ll find the island of Maui decked with lights, ornaments, and Christmas cheer.

Maui is already known for the kindness of its people, so the holidays are especially filled with warmth and Aloha.

As you’re making your Christmas vacation plans, I want to give you some fun ideas to celebrate the holiday season in Maui.

Your first stop with the family is to see Lahaina’s famous banyan tree wrapped in Christmas lights.

The beautiful banyan tree will be wrapped in thousands of Christmas lights and the banyan tree can be located off Front Street in Lahaina town.

In keeping with tradition, Lahaina’s historic Banyan Tree will be lit at 6:30 pm with 6500 colored Christmas lights for the entire holiday season from December 2nd to January 5th, 2024.

Keiki activities will kick off at noon with the arrival of Santa at the North Pole. Other activities include cookie decorating, face painting, and Christmas crafts.

You are also invited to come out and meet Banyan Snowman arriving at 4 pm. He is donated and carved on-site by Maui Ice Company. Parents bring your cameras for this great photo opportunity.

Christmas is a great time to go shopping in Maui. Consider buying locally made crafts and artwork for gifts.  Lahaina has lots of shops and Hawaii is one of the best warm places to visit in December.

We also like Whalers Village in Kaanapali and the Shops at Wailea in Wailea.

Where to Stay in Maui

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is located in Wailea, a neighborhood in Kihei, and is next to a golf course and on the beach.

While the natural beauty of Wailea Beach and Polo Beach can be enjoyed by anyone, those looking for an activity can check out Maalaea Harbor.

Keawakapu Beach North and Maluaka Beach are two other places to visit that come recommended. Discover the area’s water adventures with water skiing and parasailing nearby, or enjoy the great outdoors with mountain biking and ecotours.

5. Belize

It’s nearing the end of October and fall is in full swing with stunning foliage and cool crisp nights,  but with winter just around the corner, now is the time to start planning your winter escape from the upcoming cold season.

Average December temperatures in Belize range from a low of 71°F or 22°C to a high of 80°F or 27°C.  You can expect the days to be quite mild and the nights cool, the perfect weather for a tropical Christmas vacation.

A Christmas vacation in Belize will depend on if you are traveling with the kiddos or just the hubby.  If you are planning a family trip with children or teens, an all-inclusive concept can be a great option.

If you are traveling with just your hubby try staying at Ka’ana Resort which is located in the Jungles of Belize.  This is not your typical beach resort in Belize but Ka’ana Resort offers daily transportation to the Mayan ruins, rainforest, and the Blue Hole.

Where to Stay in Belize

Bocawina Rainforest Resort is located in the heart of the Mayflower Bocawina National Park and is the perfect place to explore the rainforest and enjoy on-site activities.

You will leave Belize with warm memories of how you spent your Christmas vacation soaking up the sun and learning new cultures, and maybe you will make new lifelong friendships.

6. Cancun, Mexico

Cancun epitomizes the ultimate Mexican beach vacation. It’s packed with amazing resorts and hotels that cater to your every need from the time you arrive until you check out.

Cancun also has one of the prettiest beaches in the Caribbean and is filled with nightlife and restaurants.

However, from late December to April, it can be intensely busy. Those pristine white sands are crowded by thousands of people boozing it up, playing volleyball, paragliding, and blasting music.

You’ll also find that Cancun is subject to tropical rains and hurricane threats in the summer months, making a low-season visit riskier.

December in Cancun is, essentially, perfect. The storms of the summer and fall months have cleared out, meaning you’re far more likely to experience sunny skies.

Where to Stay in Cancun

Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun – Adults Only – All Inclusive is located in Zona Hotelera, a neighborhood in Cancun, and is near theme parks and on the beach.

Shoppers can check out La Isla Shopping Mall, while everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of Delfines Beach and Norte Beach.

West Coast of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun, and Punta Nizuc National Park and Extreme Adventure are also worth visiting.

Discover the area’s water adventures with kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling nearby, or enjoy the great outdoors with skydiving.

7. The Bahamas

The roughly 700 islands that make up the Bahamas lure millions of visitors to this paradise’s white sandy shores, fishing, and scuba diving excursions, and luxurious accommodations each year.

Just 182 miles (293 kilometers) off the coast of Miami, the coral archipelago of the Bahamas rises out of jewel-toned seas, complete with swaying palms, virgin beaches, and a richly Caribbean culture.

Most visitors to the islands find themselves in bustling Nassau or Freeport, where the cruise ships dock.

Explore hidden culinary gems in Nassau on a walking and tasting tour; get the inside scoop on local landmarks; or take a shore excursion from Freeport to the less-crowded part of Grand Bahama Island.

There, Lucayan National Park is home to one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems and visitors can stroll along miles of unspoiled beaches.

Those in search of an even more laid-back experience still should head to the Out Islands; thanks to tours that provide aquatic transportation, getting there couldn’t be easier.

Watch for wildlife—including swimming piglets—on the Exumas, accessible via powerboat tour from Nassau; or cruise over to Rose Island for snorkeling or kayaking.

Regardless of your vacation agenda, there’s an island or a cay in the Bahamas that’s got you covered.

Meanwhile, history buffs can explore the ruins and artifacts from the colonial era and indigenous peoples like the Lucayan Indians.

The best time to visit the Bahamas is from mid-December to mid-April, the country’s peak season.

Though temperatures here are great year-round (they rarely dip below 60 degrees), the islands fall within the hurricane belt, so hurricanes may be a factor between June 1 and Nov. 30 (the Atlantic hurricane season).

Where to Stay in the Bahamas

Sandals Royal Bahamian is the most elegant all-inclusive resort with an exotic offshore island adventure.

This beach hotel in Nassau, The Bahamas, offers two sky-sized pools, the all-new Coconut Grove lounge area, 5-Star Global Gourmet™ dining with 12 dining options, including 2 all-new food trucks, and an award-winning Red Lane® Spa.

The best time to visit Mauritius is from May to December when the weather is cool, dry, and sunny.  The perfect December weather and the warm atmosphere allow Mauritius to draw in visitors from around the world who are on the lookout for a warm December vacation.

You will be able to relax and enjoy the sun and surf at beaches. But while the island nation is blessed with such an inviting climate persisting all-round the year.

Since Mauritius is situated in the southwest wing of the Indian Ocean, it is profoundly affected by the southeast trade winds. The weather, however, remains cozily warm and delightfully pleasant the whole year long.

You can comfortably swim in the crystal clear waters surrounding the island due to the conveniently melting temperature of the water.

In short, it would be an equally good idea to pick any time of the year to make your travel plans to Mauritius.

On land or at sea, this enchanting island offers endless opportunities for your next adventure.

Some say the service at the Four Seasons is good and that the property has unique amenities. The Italian restaurant at the resort has a warm manager, but some say the food is not truly Italian.

How To Stay Safe While Traveling

There have been incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning at resorts, which have left some potential visitors with questions and doubts.

Understanding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly when inhaled in high concentrations.

Common sources of carbon monoxide include faulty fuel-burning appliances, such as gas heaters, furnaces, and water heaters. In recent resort incidents, carbon monoxide poisoning deaths have been linked to faulty ventilation systems or poorly maintained equipment.

Staying Safe at Resorts:

  1. Research and Choose Reputable Resorts: Before booking your stay, research the resort’s safety record, reviews, and certifications. Look for resorts that prioritize guest safety, regularly inspect their facilities, and maintain proper ventilation systems.
  2. Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Pack a portable carbon monoxide detector or inquire whether the resort provides them in guest rooms. These devices will alert you to the presence of high levels of carbon monoxide and provide an early warning in case of a leak.
  3. Familiarize Yourself with Resort Safety Measures: Upon arrival, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the resort’s emergency procedures, including evacuation routes, fire exits, and safety guidelines. Ensure you know how to report any concerns about gas appliances or ventilation to the appropriate resort staff.
  4. Be Mindful of Your Surroundings: While in your room, be cautious of any signs of potential carbon monoxide leaks. If you experience symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, or confusion, it could be an indication of carbon monoxide poisoning. Immediately exit the room, alert the resort staff, and seek medical attention.
  5. Seek Professional Inspections: For added peace of mind, consider hiring a qualified inspector to assess the ventilation and gas-burning appliances in your resort room before your stay. This step can help identify any potential risks and ensure the room is safe for occupancy.

If you’re looking for travel safety essentials, you can check out my Amazon store for a selection of must-have items that can enhance your safety and security while exploring Mexico.

Conclusion: Warm Place to visit in December

Some people are just not meant for winter, so when December comes around – all cold and frosty, a warm beach and a heated pool sound extremely tempting.

You end up asking yourself (or Google) ‘ok I’m done with winter, where is hot in December?’ and you find yourself booking the next available flight.

Besides, who needs Christmas presents when you can have some winter sunshine instead?
