If you want the short list, the most romantic things to do in Cabo San Lucas are a sunset sail around El Arco, a couples massage on the beach, and a slow dinner with your feet in the sand. Everything else is a bonus.

James and I are the kind of couple that likes a little adventure in the morning and a lot of doing-nothing by the afternoon, and Cabo lets you have both in the same day.

Start with sunrise. I know, I know, you’re on vacation.

But the beach is empty, the light is soft, and it’s the one time you’ll have that view to yourselves. Grab coffee, walk the sand, and watch the fishing boats head out.

Book one couples spa afternoon. Nearly every resort in Cabo offers side-by-side massages, and several set the tables right on the beach or on a bluff over the water.

It’s the kind of thing you say you’ll do and then skip; don’t skip it. Book it for your second day, before the sunburn.

Then give yourselves one proper date night: a reservation at Sunset Monalisa or El Farallon, a bottle of wine, and no phones.

That’s the trip. Sail, spa, dinner. Do those three and you’ve had a romantic Cabo getaway, even if you never leave the resort for anything else.

Adventurous Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas for Couples

If you and your partner get restless lying still, Cabo has enough adrenaline to fill a week.

The two things I tell every couple to do are get on the water and get into the desert. Cabo is one of the only places where you can snorkel a marine preserve in the morning and ride the dunes by ATV that same afternoon.

On the water, Médano Beach is your launch pad. It’s a two-mile stretch of sand lined with bars and boutique resorts, and it’s where you’ll rent everything from jet skis to paddleboards to snorkel gear.

Rent a jet ski and ride out toward Lover’s Beach; it’s the best way to see Land’s End up close without a big tour crowd.

If you’d rather go under the water than over it, book a snorkel trip to Chileno Bay or Santa María; both are protected coves with calm, clear water and more fish than you’d expect.

In the desert, an ATV tour is the classic: two machines, miles of dune trails, and a guide who lets you open it up once you’ve got the hang of it.

For something higher off the ground, there are zipline and canyon canopy tours through the Baja backcountry, and parasailing right off Médano if you want the view without the harness burn.

A word from someone who’s done the “I’m fine” routine and regretted it: book adventure tours through a reputable operator with real reviews, wear the life jacket, and confirm your operator is licensed.

Cabo is safe, but the ocean and the desert don’t care how cute your swimsuit is.

Whale Watching in Cabo San Lucas (December–April)

If you’re visiting Cabo between December and April, whale watching is the most magical thing you’ll do as a couple, and it costs less than most dinners.

Every winter, humpback and gray whales migrate thousands of miles down to the warm water of the Sea of Cortez to breed and calve, and Cabo sits right in the middle of their nursery.

The season runs roughly mid-December through mid-April, and peak sightings are January through March.

On a good morning, you’ll see breaches, tail slaps, and, if you’re lucky, a mother swimming with her calf. James still talks about the first time a humpback surfaced close enough that we could hear it breathe.

There is nothing romantic about screaming “OH MY GOD” in each other’s faces, and yet, there we were.

Book a small-group or private boat rather than the big party catamarans; you’ll get closer, the guide can actually talk to you, and you won’t be elbow to elbow with fifty strangers.

Bring a light jacket (the water is cooler than the beach), and go in the morning when the sea is calmest. Most tours run two to three hours and include a guide who’ll point out what you’re seeing.

This is a seasonal window, so if your trip lands in whale season, put it on the calendar before you book anything else.

Sunset Sail Around El Arco — What It’s Really Like

A sunset sail around El Arco is the single most romantic thing you can do in Cabo, and it’s the one experience I tell every couple not to talk themselves out of.

El Arco “the Arch” is the rock formation at Land’s End where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific, and from the water it frames the sky, the sea, and the sand into the postcard everyone comes to Cabo for.

Here’s what it’s actually like. I booked ours on Viator, which is my go-to for excursions because I can read real reviews before I hand over my money.

The tour bus picked us up from our hotel, and it was a quick drive to the dock.

I’d braced myself for a packed boat and was pleasantly surprised there were 14 of us on a 50-foot sailboat, just enough people to feel social but not crammed.

We watched a bigger party boat pass us, everyone packed in like sardines, and I was grateful I’d paid a little more for the smaller sail.

The second we settled into the cushioned seats, the crew handed us mimosas and passed appetizers, and they kept the drinks coming from beer, wine, cocktails, soft drinks, whatever you wanted.

We sailed past Lover’s Beach and the sea lions on the rocks as the sky went pink over the Pacific.

For around $85 a person it was, hands down, the best money we spent in Cabo.

One tip: book the sunset slot specifically, sit toward the back for the best Arch photos, and bring a light layer it cools off fast once the sun drops.

Baja Ranch & Camel Safari: Our Favorite Cabo Tour

Of everything we did in Cabo, the Baja Ranch & Camel Safari is the one James and I still bring up at dinner parties.

A camel is not the first animal you picture in Mexico, but this four-hour tour through the Baja desert turned out to be the most fun and the most unexpectedly romantic day of the whole trip.

It starts with a guided nature walk.

Our guide taught us how to survive in the desert: which plants you can eat, which ones to avoid, what to do if you’re ever stranded out there.

(I will now tell you I do not do bugs or reptiles, so when a spider crossed our path I gave an Oscar-worthy performance.) After the walk, we climbed into an open-air off-road vehicle and rode across the sand to the main event.

The camel ride runs along a wide stretch of Pacific beach, and the guides walk you through camel behavior as you go.

I’ll be honest, I fell in love.

Camels are some of the gentlest, friendliest animals I’ve ever been around, and a sweetheart named Powder, “the kissing camel,” completely won me over.

I was nervous about holding a carrot in my mouth for her to take, and I worried for nothing.

The tour wraps at a local ranch with lunch, fresh tortillas, real salsas, traditional Mexican dishes, and a tequila tasting where you learn how it’s made before you sip.

I kept it to a couple of pours, because tequila and I have a complicated relationship, but it was the perfect ending to a day in the desert.

Best Golf Courses in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo has quietly become one of the best golf destinations in the world, with more than a dozen championship courses carved between the desert and the sea.

If one of you golfs or you both do it’s easy to build a morning tee time into a romantic trip and still make your dinner reservation.

Here’s where I’d send you. Diamante’s Dunes Course consistently ranks among the best in Mexico, a links-style layout right on the Pacific that feels like nothing else in Baja.

Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course is the famous one, with several holes hugging the Sea of Cortez and views that make bad shots forgivable.

Quivira is the most dramatic of the group, cliffside holes perched high above the ocean, the kind of course you photograph as much as you play.

And Puerto Los Cabos, over in San José del Cabo, is a beautiful, less-crowded option if you want a quieter round.

If golf isn’t your partner’s thing, most courses have gorgeous clubhouses and terraces, so one of you can play while the other sits with a cocktail and the view.

Book tee times well ahead in high season (November through April), and go early; the light is better, and the desert heat hasn’t set in yet.

Best Beaches in Cabo San Lucas for Couples

Cabo has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but not all of them are swimmable; the Pacific side has strong currents, so knowing which is which matters.

For couples, the ones worth your time are Lover’s Beach, Chileno, and Santa María.

Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor) is the romantic one, and for good reason. It’s a hidden cove tucked between the rocks at Land’s End, reachable only by water taxi from the marina.

Go in the morning before the crowds, bring a blanket and something cold to drink, and you’ll have one of the prettiest spots in Mexico nearly to yourselves.

Walk through to the Pacific side locals call it Divorce Beach for dramatic views, but don’t swim there; the surf is no joke.

Chileno Bay and Santa María are your snorkeling beaches, both protected coves along the Tourist Corridor with calm, clear water and easy entry.

Chileno has facilities and shade; Santa María is smaller and quieter. Both are perfect for a low-key beach day where you actually get in the water.

Médano Beach is the fun one: swimmable, walkable, and lined with bars and vendors, so it’s where you go if you want music, a margarita, and people-watching rather than solitude.

If you want romance, go early or late; if you want the party, midday is your window.

Most Romantic Restaurants in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo does romantic dinners better than almost anywhere in Mexico, largely because so many restaurants are built around the view cliffs over the Pacific, tables in the sand, sunsets on a plate.

I’ll give you my honest take, including what to skip.

For a splurge-worthy date night, Sunset Monalisa is the most romantic table in Cabo; hands down, it’s perched on the cliffs with the Arch in the distance, and you’ll want to book the sunset seating weeks ahead.

El Farallon at Waldorf Astoria is the other showstopper, built into the rocks right above the crashing waves, with a champagne-and-oyster bar to start.

For something a little more relaxed, Sur Beach House puts your table near the water without the formality, and Nick-San is where I’d send you for standout sushi.

A few more I’d trust: Edith’s for classic Mexican in a festive setting, Lorenzillo’s for lobster, and Pitahayas if you want Asian-Mexican fusion with a view.

Now, the honest part: we ate at a couple of local spots that got hyped, and I wasn’t impressed.

The upscale, view-driven restaurants are where Cabo shines, so if you’re only here a few nights, spend your dinners there and don’t waste one on a mediocre meal.

Reserve everything in advance in high season; the good tables go fast.

Romantic Free & Low-Cost Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas

Not every romantic moment in Cabo needs a reservation or a credit card.

Some of my favorite times with James cost nothing at all, and if you’re balancing a splurge trip with a budget, these fill the days beautifully.

Start with the Marina boardwalk. It wraps around the harbor with palm-lined paths, yachts in the slips, and a clear line of sight toward Land’s End and the Arch.

Walk it at sunset with an ice cream or a drink from one of the marina bars; it’s free, it’s easy, and it’s quietly romantic in a way the big tours aren’t.

Sunrise and sunset on the beach belong on this list too; the light show is different every night, and it never costs a thing.

For a low-cost evening with more to it, drive over to San José del Cabo for the Art Walk, held Thursday evenings from November through June in the downtown Gallery District.

The galleries open their doors, there’s wine and live music in the streets, and you can wander for hours without spending more than you want to.

It’s the most local, least touristy night you’ll have in Los Cabos, and it’s one of the things the big guides forget to tell couples about.

Round it out with a water taxi to Lover’s Beach (just a few dollars each way) and a cheap, unforgettable morning in a cove most people pay a tour to reach.

Best Day Trips from Cabo San Lucas for Couples

If you’re in Cabo for more than a few days, get out of the resort bubble for one of them; the towns and coastline beyond Cabo San Lucas are some of the best parts of Baja, and Mexico is safe enough that a day trip is easy to pull off.

I’d either rent a car or hire a private car service, which is what we do so we can actually relax and take in the drive.

The easiest and most rewarding is San José del Cabo, Cabo’s quieter twin city about 30 minutes away.

It’s the art town, cobblestone streets, a pretty mission church, and the Gallery District I mentioned above. Perfect for a slow lunch and an afternoon of wandering.

A little farther, Todos Santos is an artsy, laid-back Pueblo Mágico about an hour north, home to the famous Hotel California and a surf-town vibe that feels a world away from the resorts.

For couples who love the outdoors, Cabo Pulmo National Park is a protected marine reserve with the healthiest coral reef in the Sea of Cortez and some of the best snorkeling and diving in North America.

La Paz, the state capital, is a two-hour drive and worth it for its waterfront malecón and boat trips to swim with sea lions.

And if you want somewhere truly off the map, Fox Canyon is a quiet nature escape for a day of hiking and soaking.

Pick one, pack water and sunscreen, and give yourselves the full day.

Where to Stay in Cabo San Lucas for Couples (Adults-Only Resorts)

More and more couples are choosing Cabo for a romantic escape, and the resorts have leaned all the way in; many are adults-only, built for privacy, and designed for exactly the honeymoon-and-anniversary crowd.

For a couples trip, I’d book an adults-only all-inclusive along the Tourist Corridor or on Médano Beach, where food, drinks, and activities are bundled and you never have to think about a bill.

Here’s where I’d send couples at the top end.

One & Only Palmilla is the icon of old-school luxury, impeccable service, and the kind of privacy celebrities pay for.

Esperanza, an Auberge Resort, sits on a bluff over the Sea of Cortez with one of the best spas in Cabo, made for slow, romantic days.

Four Seasons Los Cabos is newer and stunning, and Pueblo Bonito Pacifica is an adults-only favorite on the Pacific side, quieter and a little more affordable.

For something lively and close to the action, Cabo Villas Beach Resort puts you right on Médano.

My advice: decide what kind of trip you want before you book. If you want to do nothing but rest, choose the Pacific side (Pacifica, Esperanza) for calm and quiet.

If you want to walk to bars, restaurants, and the marina, stay on or near Médano. Either way, book the adults-only option; the whole point of a couples trip is not sharing the pool with a cannonball contest.

Is Cabo San Lucas Safe for Couples?

Yes, Cabo San Lucas is one of the safest destinations in Mexico for tourists, and I say that as a woman who has traveled to more than 65 countries and writes about travel safety for a living.

If the U.S. media has you convinced you’ll be in danger the moment you land, I understand the fear I felt it once too, and I let it keep me from Mexico far longer than it should have. It was so far from the truth.

Cabo’s economy runs on tourism, and the resort zones, marina, and Tourist Corridor have a heavy, visible security and tourism-police presence.

Los Cabos was also the first destination in the world to earn Sharecare Health Security VERIFIED status, meaning its hotels, transportation, and public spaces meet hundreds of expert-validated safety and hygiene standards.

Violent crime is overwhelmingly tied to areas and activity that have nothing to do with vacationers.

That said, safe doesn’t mean careless. Use licensed taxis or your resort’s transportation rather than flagging down random cars, stick to the Tourist Corridor at night, don’t flash cash or leave drinks unattended, and respect the ocean; the Pacific-side currents are the real danger in Cabo, not people.

Do those simple things and a couples trip to Cabo is as safe as it is romantic.
